Some first thoughts about my next couple of years on the saddle

Alrighty, I’ve decided to blog in the English language. At least as much as possible (I hope my English is good enough for it). And I will use this blog for my upcoming bicycle adventure.

In 2016 I want to travel the world by bicycle and I will begin to prepare it while I am still living and working in Denmark. By preparing I mean to read as much as possible, like Tom Allan, Alastair Humphreys (both his books are highly recommended), Emily Chappell and so on, set out a route, investigate visas, make a camping stove out of a beer can, asking a lot of questions, get to know my bike through and through.

I had the idea of cycling the world for a while now, but when I stumbled upon Emily Chappell’s blog I was sold, as we say in Dutch. Then it really started to itch and I started to read much more. A lot of people are doing it or have done it. Damn, I thought, it is possible, so why can’t I do it? In a way I postponed it until September, because then I’ll get back to the Netherlands, but all of a sudden I thought, I am going to do this, so why not start earlier with preparing it? And that is exactly what I am doing at the moment. I can’t think about anything else at the moment, the chainwheels in my head turn in full speed. What route to take, what equipment to take, if I want sponsorship or not und so weiter und so weiter? I am considering sponsorship, but I have no idea if it will succeed and according to Tom Allan, I can better drop it completely and start cycling. But I am stubborn and do want to be sponsored by some companies I really like. So I just try and see if I will succeed. Actually, I already got one sponsor, namely the Ljouwertian boss of metal, Tamme ‘Big Bad Wolf’ Oosterhof (you can’t be on the road for so long and not listening to metal). So, if you want to sponsor as well, be my guest. Or if you want me discourage me in my search for sponsors like Tom, be my guest as well. Want to give me advice on a complete different terrain, be my guest!

  1. Do it because if you don’t, you’ll regret it all your life. But prepare yourself psychologically. This is going to be your biggest challenge. People who are going to try to discourage you and they will get into your head. You’ll have to be very strong mentally before and during your adventure. Have fun!

  2. Hello Dérapage contrôlé!
That is exactly why I will do it, because I don’t want to be one of those people who will be old and feeble and is reflecting on his life and than will regret the big bike trip he always wanted to do. 🙂
I have the feeling I am already quite prepared psychologically, but it is good you put stress on the importance of the matter!
You have fun as well, and who knows we meet on the road!
